Angela Davis on the Dream Act
During NOI No Borders training this week, Texas Spring Political Director, Derek Washington had the great opportunity of speaking with civil rights activist, Angela Davis.
Through her activism and her scholarship over the last decades, Angela Davis has been deeply involved in our nation’s quest for social justice. Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – has always emphasized the importance of building communities of struggle for economic, racial, and gender equality.

It means that you’re bi-cultural: both Asian and American, yet neither at the same time. In Asia, you’re American; in America, you’re Asian. You are also bi-cultural in the sense that you walk a fine line between being a person of color and being a token white.
It means that you’re a perpetual…
“In this society, if a man is called a woman, that’s the biggest insult he could get. Is that because women are considered something less? I know people want me to sort of defend myself, to sit here and be like, ‘I’m a boy, but I wear makeup sometimes.’ But, you know, to me, it doesn’t really matter. While i’m so down with Reproductive Justice and also feeling really disgusted with Rush Limbaugh, i hope that when we’re talking and thinking about the things he says and the ways we are responding, we are careful not to use language and ideology that bolsters the idea that people involved in the sex trade are “bad” and less worthy of access to contraception than “good” Georgetown law students who testify before congress… (shouldn’t we be challenging the negativity surrounding Rush Limbaugh’s views on “prostitutes” instead of organizing around the the message that “we” (people who access contraceptives for medical/personal purposes) are “not prostitutes”?)
